Family Update – May 2023

By donna.

May was a month of many miles of miracles!   We started off heading south to survey  the Costa Vincentina which stretches from Burgau to Odeceixe thru the Vincentine Coast Natural Park. This absolutely  beautiful protected area is dotted with amazing wild beaches, sand dunes, wildflowers, multi-colored rocks and imponent cliffs. These beaches are fantastic  locations for those surfers proficient in riding big waves in the wild Atlantic Ocean! There are also beaches that  double as river banks surrounding shallow lagoons which are a perfect environment for families with kids, kayakers, and paddle boarders. An added feature of the area is the Rota Vicentina network of hiking paths which traverse a landscape of estuaries, wetlands, and towering cliffs. As we continued south we were accompanied  by  very strong winds passing through the region which was great for the surfers but which seriously hampered our videoing efforts. By the time we got to Sagres, the extreme western tip of the Algarve, it was virtually impossible to do any type of filming due to the strong winds. However, we did  meet some very nice people along the way, for example, a lovely Scottish couple who helped jumpstart our caravan when we woke up one morning with no battery power!  Another time we were rescued by a local mechanic when our gear shaft malfunctioned and we were left stranded out in the middle of the cork trees!  Ah, the wonderful adventures of the caravaning life 🙂

It is not something we take pictures of very often, but one of the most accomplished part of our voyages is when we meet people with whom we are able to share the good news of the Gospel. We have a very easy and straight forward opportunity when we present our audio Bible as a gift from China, with love, which we always take with us for that purpose. It is the most amazing surprise to receive a Bible when you did not expect it. An audio Bible at that – something some people did not know existed, droped on them, as from heaven. This has indeed been one of the most fulfilling part of our voyages. While we are filming nature created by God, to match the Word that created it, we are also spreading the Good news of the Gospel, leaving the Word with at least some of the people we meet. We thank God for that.

Sr600 audio Bible – A blessing to share with others

On our second journey we headed up towards central Portugal. Here we were greeted with lots of clouds and rain which was absolutely fantastic as it was beautiful for filming and it replenished the earth with moisture. We find the people in this area very friendly and it is easy to strike up a conversation. This has led us to new friendships in the cities we stayed in and we are looking forward to returning to this area often. It is very fruitful, not only in a metaphorical sense, but literally: fruit trees are heavy laden and especially cherries trees, which are being harvested now. Our friend Andre drove us around the rural areas and it was a sight to see.

Caravan life is simple and free.
Algarve is sun, sand and sea – Donna loves it all.
The new verb: to drone.

Well, there would be a lot more to say, but we shall come back next month with more news. Hopefully we will hear more from you all and we will get more images and news from other parts of our family. Love and prayers.

Family Update – April 2023

By Donna.

“Páscoa “: This is a very special time of the year in Portugal!! The word Páscoa originates from the Latin Pasch, which is derived from the Hebrew Pesach or Pesah, which means passage or passover. (Read more about this is the Post Scriptum)

In Central Portugal Páscoa is widely celebrated as a time to unite families and friends and commemorate certain long held traditions. During Quaresma (40 days of Lent) and Holy Week, there are many processions and religious celebrations. This year we went to spend those days in Penacova, near Coimbra, Jorge’s hometown, to see if people were actually still participating in the festivities as it was when he was a little boy. To our surprise, the city was packed with people, something very rare for this small town. The traditional Good Friday procession could be observed from various higher grounds in the main thoroughfares. The protagonists were Veronica, who wiped Jesus’s face with a cloth, the body of Jesus and his mother Mary. The firemen and local band had their place as well as the scouts, followed by the faithful citizens. It was a lovely Spring day and the spirit was happy and peaceful. Fortuitously, we met with  friends and family members and fondly reminisced of days gone by.

Donna with new-found friend in Penacova

We stayed in the local campground on the  banks of the Mondego River. I think some of our best time with the Lord was spent praising Him in the glorious habitat He provided for us and all creation seemed to echo His praises as well!!!  “Let the heaven and the earth praise him. the seas, and everything that moveth therein. Psalm 69:34.

We had a music jam session with some of the campers. One couple was very friendly and I had a long talk with the wife. Her husband has some very serious health issues and she was genuinely touched with the IBible we gave them, We became fast friends, and hopefully we will meet again when we return.

Singing on Easter Sunday with neighbour caravanistas.

Our time in this campground was interesting indeed. We even had the drone crash right on the banks of the river. The bramble bushes were thick and we had to get tools to break through. The campground manager was hepful to lend us his tools but it took us 5 hours to get to the rescue spot.

You see the drone hanging there on the last image? Well, it took 5 hours to get to it.

We also had great conversations with a man from Liverpool, living in Lorvão, near Penacova, We met at the river beach where he came for a swim. He told us how he enjoys life in Portugal, traveling the hilly countryside by bike, working online, and doing lots of swimming. He sounded like a truth seeker, a modern day hippy. We encouraged him to find the truth in Jesus.

After our time in Penacova, we travelled North to Pedrogão Grande, and later to Fundão.

In Pedrogão Grande, we met a couple staying at the campground, who invited us for afternoon tea. The wife absolutely defied science, as according to the doctors she should have died years ago, but here she was living with a multitude of physical ailments and pain indescribable. Her husband, also, had a recent cancer diagnosis and was awaiting treatment. Once again the conversation and the iBible we gave them were greatly appreciated. We pray for their healing and the grace to go through so much. It reminds us how thankful we should be for every day of health.

Pedrogão campground

Next day we went to Fundão, famous for its delicious cherries. We found fields and fields full of cherry trees in beautiful blossom. We met with Joseph, who was to show us a small plot of land. In the end we became friends and we gave him a couple of audio Bibles for him and his family. He was surprised for this unexpected gift. He sounded positively touched. Fundão is near Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain in Continental Portugal. We stayed in local campgroundd and ventured around the hills filming and enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

Cherry trees in blossom everywhere

Back at home, and in preparation for our next road trip, we undertook various useful upgrades to the campervan. New electrical outlets, organization hacks and kitchen shelves! We also worked on some necessary home improvements .

Autocaravan upgraded interior

Also, we took the opportunity to attend a lecture by Dr. Jordan B. Peterson in Lisbon’s Campo Pequeno bullfighting ring! This venue doubles as an event arena, and of course the organizers leave out the bulls and add a stage. There was a large crowd in attendance to this event featuring this polemic and now famous psychologist. People seemed inspired by his talk, where he reiterated the fact that each one of us has to take personal responsibility for the things that are wrong with our own life first, and then can we reach out to solve the  problems around ourselves, eventually meeting society at large. He referred to this in reference to Jesus’ admonition to “take up our cross and bear it”. .Among a large amount of subject matter he cited various Biblical references. Both he and his wife Tammy were greeted with generous applause when they gave testimony to the impact of God and spirituality in life’s challenging situations.I believe they are a force for good in the world and we pray for their health and their capacity ito reach out to an ever growing woke society. It is evident that many people welcome good conservative values and are in search of the truth.

We had Benjamim”s 27th birthday on the 25th, and we celebrated it in spite of the distance! Ben has been busy with many projects, one of which is his music. He is a prolific songwriter and recently released a new recording of his song ” Wait Till Summer”. This song encourages people not to be hesitant and wait for a perfect time in the future, but instead accomplish what  needs to be done right now! He was also interviewed for a local radio and tv show in Macau where he shared a bit of his background in music and he sang his newly produced song. We wish Ben an awesome year to come and eagerly await freshly minted music productions!

Not least, sweet Aurora has  turned 5!  ” For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven..” We are happy that it is Aurora’s time to be 5 and pray that she has a very blessed year to come as she continues to bring so much joy and happiness to those around her!

Aurora 5, with Emanuel and Mandy and sister Isabel. A beautiful family.
Here again 3 years ago. Sweet.

Gloria continues on her Erasmus mission in Italy. Since her academic requirements are not being as stringent as usual, she has been able to do some traveling to see the country and get acquainted with its history and culture. This is perhaps a great opportunity to search deeper into her Latin roots. (Polish/Slavic  roots are also worthy of greater study but that is for another time, another year.)

Many things are always happening with our family. We leave some for next time. We certainly keep everyone in our prayers and hope to be in yours.

P.S.: (My further considerations about Pascoa/Easter)
The word Páscoa originates from the Latin Pasch, which is derived from the Hebrew Pesach or Pesah, which means passage or passover.  Many countries continue to use this term to celebrate the festival held on the first Sunday after the first full moon of Spring in the Northern hemisphere, (autumn in the Southern hemisphere). For  the Jews,  Pesach is  the celebration of the liberation of the people of Israel from dominion of the Egyptians. The angel of death passed over the houses and protected the first born of every family if the house was marked with the blood of a perfect sacrificial lamb. God then used Moses to lead the people out of slavery to the Promised Land. Chistians celebrate  Páscoa in remembrance of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and His passage from death to life three days after His crucifixion. Jesus Christ, the perfect sacrificial  passover Lamb of God, offered Himself  through death on a cross as the payment for our sins, and thus delivered us from the captivity of sin. “Christ, our passover is sacrificed for us” 1 Cor 5:7. On the other hand, the anglo-saxon translation of Páscoa to” Easter”  does  not originate from the original meaning in the Hebrew, but rather from a pagan goddess ‘eostre’, which represented fertility and newness of life. Aforetime, in April, at the beginning of Spring, they worshipped this entity, whose symbols were the rabbit and the egg. The rabbit was designated to distribute colored eggs all over the world.  Today, Easter is an incorporation of the Christian Church and certain pagan rituals beginning in the year 325.

Family Update – March 2023

By Donna

 Glorious Spring  2023 has arrived!!!
All of nature is rejoicing in this fact and we had to be out and about to capture some of it’s defining moments! This month our wordproaction filming took us to beautiful “Alto Alentejo”,”Upper Alentejo” that is, to the east of Lisbon.Together with “Baixo Alentejo” to the south, Alentejo is the largest province in Portugal and  an important agriculture center. We set out in direction of the Alqueva Dam which is the largest dam and artificial lake in Western Europe. In course of our journey we stopped in various places one of which was Monsaraz,on the margin of the Guadiana River near its border with Spain. It is one of the oldest settlements of southern Portugal, occupied before written history, reorganized during Roman occupation and eventually occupied by the Visigoths, Arabs, Mozerarabs, Jews, and later Christians after the Reconquista. Monsaraz is a walled medieval city on a hilltop with a strategic castle, various churches and museums where one can learn of the fascinating history of this ancient city.

The vast mass of water and small inlets of the Alqueva Dam provide a beautiful backdrop to the natural landscape of the city. The dam not only is a power source but mainly a water source to irrigate the entire Alentejo region. As you can see in the pictures it is a beautiful green region abundant with olive trees, vineyards, cork trees and endless fruit trees!

Alentejo and Alqueva Lake from Mourao

We discovered some lovely glamping spots! Eco-camping is all the rage as people are eager to get in touch with nature. It also is very quiet at this time of the year as the tourist season has not begun as of yet.! Coming soon to a location near us!

A major surprise occured on Father’s Day, celebrated on March 19th in Portugal.. As we arrived for lunch at Cristy and Nunu’s place, dear Joana popped out of the kitchen  as a special delivery for the occasion!  It was surreal She came purposely  for work engagements but kept it all a secret from us!  We spent a lovely afternoon together  and were thankful to meet with Joana a few times before her short stay came to an end!

Dear Julie celebrated another year of life this month! It has been allmost a year since we were together with Julie and family and we do miss them dearly!

Almost one year ago in Portugal

Anticipating this Holy week, that just started, we hope and pray you all enjoy a beautiful Easter, meaningful and deep, remembering the Sacrifice of Jesus our Lord on the Cross and His marvelous, Miraculous Resuscitation. Happy Easter.

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

Family Update – February 2023

By Donna:

Boast not thyself of tomorrow for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. Proverbs 27:1.
Imagine waking up from a peaceful sleep at 4 oclock in the morning and everything around you is shaking. Your house, your bed, the earth under your building. On Monday, February 6, 2023 in southeast Turkey and neighboring Syria, the people not only experienced an earthquake of Magnitude 7.8 but a second one ten hours later of M7.7. This seismic activity carried on for week with thousands of aftershocks of various degrees. As of March 1st, more than 51,800 deaths were confirmed, more than 45,00 in Turkey and more than 6,700 in Syria. Needless to say, this is a tragedy of immense proportion which has affected more than 20 million people. There are amazing stories of miracles of people surviving under the rubble for days and a baby born under a collapsed building. We give thanks to God that Selen and her family are safe and sound. Selen lives in Adana, Turkey, more than 200 km from the epicenter, yet many buildings were destroyed with large numbers of casualties and injured survivors. After the first quake hit, Selen and her mother, along with several neighbors, were able to leave their building and spend the night in a car outside of the city. They later returned home to assess the damage and were then able to book a flight to Istanbul. Thank God the airport in Adana was still functioning and they were able to travel safely to stay with Selen’s brother. It is going to be a long road to getting back home as damaged buildings will have to be rebuilt and with the amount of destruction incurred it will take time. Please, keep this situation in your prayers.

As you remember, Gabriel and Selen were engaged in December last year.
For now the wedding plans are on hold as there are other priorities to consider at this moment.
Meanwhile, Gloria has moved to Pisa, Italy as she takes part in the Erasmus student exchange program. She will be doing her internships at the hospitals there and be involved in the various activities organized by the student organisation there.
Gabriel and Emanuel were camping in Hong Kong and sent in some amazing images.
Benjamim got some nice drone images in Macau and we are eager to see more.
Riley enjoying the sun in cold weather.
Other than that, all is well as we pray for each other. Love,

Family Upate – January 2023

by Donna

January, was a month  of new beginnings, replete with  hope and expectation of many good things to come!  Here we are in the cold of winter , a phenomenon we have not experienced for quite some time. Waking up to 1°C weather is not our natural comfort zone, but as the day progresses we have the sun warming the atmosphere and  our hearts along with it!! We are getting accustomed to the temperatures and looking forward excitedly to Spring!!!

We made a road trip up to the North this month to visit with friends and distribute more iBibles. Braving the cold, we adapted our caravaning  techniques and added more clothing as per time of day:)   En route we visited a few “Aldeias de Xisto” roughly translated as “Slate Villages”, where all the houses are made of slate!  Walking through the small alleyways and enjoying the peculiar architecture is an amazing experience and the quietness of the countryside and the fresh air is well worth the journey!

One nebulous  morning we explored the Castle of Lousa and it’s beautiful surroundings of waterfalls and mountains. Surreal is a good adjective for its description! Also complementary to the experience is the fact that this time of the year there are no tourists lining up for parking so we had the place to ourselves . Nice!  Our appreciation of being close to nature is growing every journey and the list of places to explore is increasing exponentially.

Lousã Castle

Upon arrival in the Douro region, an extremely beautiful region dressed in its winter attire, we attended a Sacred Music Concert in the Monte Corvo Basilica with our good friend who is a native of that city. The organist and the choir were inspiring! The hymns written to give glory to the Creator!

There were 3 birthday celebrants this month, Emanuel, Cristiana and Philip! All three entered into their new year with good  health, precious families and hope for the future! God is good and we wish them all the best for their upcoming year! The Chinese New Year was also celebrated in January 2023. Although not as prominent in Portugal as in the East, we celebrated  with traditional Chinese gastronomy and family ! Very yummy indeed and it brought back many happy memories of our years in China!  Xin Nian Kuai Le to all!

This month Gabriel set off for Macau to begin a semester of teaching. He is dearly missed but  we know that he is happily placed with  family and friends in his new abode. Gloria is making plans for her Erasmus semester and will be departing in just a few days.  She continues to prepare and make arrangements for her semester in the University of Pisa.

Family Update – December 2022

By Donna:

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Somehow, the joy and hope enveloped in the knowledge that a Saviour has been born permeates every day of the Christmas season! It does take a lot of time and energy to prepare special events, think of the people to bless and prepare gifts of love. All the time spent thinking of others is what brings that blessed inner happiness. 🙂 We were so happy to have family and friends with whom we are able to share those special moments: the songs, smiles, laughter and peace of Christmas.

Merry Christmas – 2022
Christmas Family dinner.

Over the past years Gloria has participated in a project called “Natal Diferente”. This year she was involved in the organization of the event whose purpose is to bring a bit of the Christmas spirit and share a moment of care through music, personal conversation and small gifts with hospitalized patients who find themselves away from home and family during Christmas. The students from the two medical faculties in Lisbon reached out to many hospitals, nursing homes, institutions, donors and fellow students reaching thousands of people not only in the Lisbon area but also Beja, Santarem, Leiria and Madeira. They also showed love and appreciation to medical staff working through the Christmas holidays.

Celebrations were held for Gabriel’s birthday along with the customary  festive celebrations. Born on the 23rd, Gabe is used to sharing his birthday with Jesus! This year, Gabriel presented us with the grand news that he and Selen are now engaged to be married!  Congratulations to them both and may this be the beginning of many many years of happiness and commitment to one another!

Oh, how quickly 2023 entered in! Once again we entrusted the New Year into the hands of the Almighty as we got together to share our special accomplishments from last year, express our prayers and hopes for the new year to come and claim promises from the unfailing Word of God to give us light on the journey ahead. “Thy Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our Path”. Psalm 119:105. Our symbolic candle lighting ceremony is a physical representation of us lighting our small candle and receiving power and light from the source of all Light, Jesus Christ, the Messiah.

Family update – November 2022

Donna:

November brought us many reasons to give thanks, the preeminent being, the Promise of God!  Jesus our promised Redeemer and Saviour who has died to pay the debt for our sins. We are daily in awe of the great love that God has shown us by giving us His only begotten Son.  “For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us“. 2 Cor 1:20. This basic truth, by the which we stand washed in the blood of Christ, is being challenged constantly in the media, in the classrooms, and in spheres of political influence. We must search the Scriptures daily in order to give an answer to every man who asks us a reason for the hope that is within us.

We celebrated Thanksgiving with Cristiana and Nuno: a sumptuous meal was served, prepared with much love and care. Thank you. Most of all, it was a blessing to have us together for the afternoon, as we also took a stroll around the center of Lisbon and saw some of the Christmas lights, along with the lack of Christ and the excess of Santa Clauss.

Also, during this month, we took a trip to the Algarve. A first for the three of us. We met there with some friends from Macau, with whom we shared some interesting thoughts and ideas. We also watched some amazing sights: great skies and even a castle. We spent the night in the camper van and that made it even more special (and affordable).

Not least, not far from where we live, we have this amazing place called Cabo Espichel. A cape where to escape on a boring Sunday afternoon, and pray. This we did with Gabriel and the result, among other things we came out with these amazing photos:

The pictures of Cristiana and Nuno’s Wedding finally came out and we have enjoyed to see them and remember the beautiful time we all enjoyed last July. Below is a good family picture, missing Emanuel and Mandy, with Isabel and Aurora, and Benjamim, who could not come.

Family Update – October 2022

By Donna

The month started off with some very happy news for Jason. Jason arrived from Macau at the beginning of June and after four months of waiting, his suitcase was finally delivered to him from the airport at the beginning of October! They say it was a very hectic summer with a great amount of traffic at the airports. Whatever the reasons, Jason is just content to have his life’s treasures back again!😊

Jason and the lost suitcase

We had a very warm and sunny month, however in foresight of what is to come this winter, Jorge ordered and installed dual pane windows for our apartment. Thanks to Gabriel and Jason we were able to get the heavy windows up three flights of stairs and into the window frames! It was an entire week of work and Jorge did an amazing job of the installation. Let the cold arrive! 🙂

Gloria participated in the iPitch competition which gives students the opportunity to win an internship at a renowned medical center. In the final phase of the competition, the participants presented their pitches on stage at the the iMed conference, an annual medical students convention in Lisbon. Gloria won the competition and was awarded a 2 week internship in Scotland focused in reconstructive surgery.

Jason has been studying hard and has gotten thru his mid term exams. He has very busy days, getting out the door at 6 am! It’s a trek to school and he regards getting to class on time a very serious issue!
On the other side of the ocean, young Zac had his 7th birthday and has entered the first grade! He has ever so much to say on a variety of subjects!! Below he dressed up as Asterix for a school event! Also, on the other side of the ocean, but cloclwise, in Macau, young Isabel is happy going through the changes of milk teeth to permanent teeth – how exciting!.

Zach, now 7, of Philip and Julie, as Asterix.
Bel Bel (of Emanuel and Mandy) new cute smile.

Not least we had a short Sunday trip to Cabo da Roca, with Joana and Jason, as Joana was about to leave for Macau and wished to visit that spot, which is famous for being the most Western point of the European continent, where Europe really starts, or where it ends, depends how you wish to look at it. Coincidently it has the Cross, the symbol of Christian faith, placed there many years ago, when Europe was indeed a Christian continent. Today, there are many questions concening whether it has become a post-Christian land. The cross remains there, nevertheless. Thank God for that.

If you wish to have a feeling how it is to travel in Portugal on a Autumn rainy day, check the following video from our car (van) camera:

Thank you so much for reading this brief update. Do not forget to pray for peace in this world – “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” Matthew 5:9

Family Update – September 2022

by Donna

We had another adventure this month on our road trip to the north. Our first stop was Coimbra, in central Portugal, the city where Jorge lived as a young boy. The interesting occurrence was that the people with whom we arranged a meeting with had chosen a location which was exactly situated in the area where Jorge used to romp and roam in the forest near the river! It has since such time developed into a highway and upper class residencial zone, however Jorge was able to walk to his former residency and perchance meet a man who lived on the same street as Jorge in his home town of Penacova and they had been playmates in their childhood years!!! Absolutely uncanny! To top it off, the campground in which we stayed was also located in the same vicinity a short walk from our meeting place. We had an interesting discussion getting to know the organist and priest from a local church and also made good friends with some adventurous youth in the beautiful campsite.
Next we were off to Porto and Espinho. The weather remained warm, to our delight and once again we were able to connect with brethren and meet some missionaries who are involved in outreach to the Chinese community. There is a neighborhood where there is a large number of people from the mainland and we contributed IBibles to the work being done there.
Following we went back up to the spectacular Alto Douro region to see our good friends and fellow laborers Abilio and Julieta. Along the way we were privileged to
camp right next to the expansive Douro River and later enjoy the magnificent landscape in Sao Lourenço, which is the River Tua with the backdrop of the mountain ranges… In Trás-os-Montes ( behind the mountains) we are beginning to understand the habits and customs of these very traditionally minded people. It is definitely a challenge bringing the light of the pure gospel of Jesus Christ, but one we plan to continue pursuing.
When nearing Lisbon our van suffered a transmission collapse and we had to get a tow truck to deliver it to our mechanic. All is well that ends well ! We thank God for His protection throughout the hundreds of kms travelled and we thank God for those who pray for us!
On the home front, Jason has started his uni course and is up very early every morning in order to get to class on time. His Portuguese skills are taking off with new classmates and lots of studies. Joana is working and living in Lisbon and Glória is pressing through her 5th year in med school. Gabriel is busy teaching and completing online projects and presently is helping with the almond and walnut harvest for a few days.
We continue to pray for Europe and the challenges it faces in the economic arena and the coming winter. May God grant us peace on earth and good will towards all men.

Family update – August 2022

by Donna

During the month of August we were able to spread our wings beyond the confines of the Lisbon area. We rediscovered the joys of camping life as we headed to our northern destinations. Since the pandemic, many people have taken advantage of the fresh air and outdoor lifestyle that is so enjoyable as the sunny dry conditions of summer here make it an excellent time to get out and explore. All the sites we stopped at were full of campers and we enjoyed the varied fellowship opportunities offered!
Our journey north was of great significance to us. We were able to meet, in person, with precious brethren we have not seen for years due to the pandemic, howbeit we have continued to work together over this period of time. Dear Paulo has been faithful in his efforts to preach the good news of the kingdom and each trip he makes to Africa he delivers the iBibles to their coveted destinations. The seeds are being planted in war torn Mozambique and we value his courage and initiative in making regular trips there. José has been a friend for decades and has also been instrumental in getting the iBibles to brethren and missionaries in his part of the country.

Jorge and Jose remembering old times.

Abílio has been a precious friend and supporter for years. Both he and we are joicing in the gift of life as he almost lost his life a short time ago due to COVID complications. As Paul said it would have added such great sorrow to have lost such a dear friend and God’s mercy and grace are clearly displayed in his miraculous recovery to almost full health. Hallelujah!

Abilio took us to his home town and to the church where he was baptized. We had the opportunity to experience the centuries old pipe organ as you will see in the clips below. The organ has an inscription in Latin, in the front, that says: ‘Praise the Lord with string instruments and organs’ (Psalm 150)

August birthdays included Jorge and Jason, Joana and Isabel! Celebrations were full of heart felt love. Below are some of the images related to other family activities and birthdays. Enjoy!

Good news from Macau: Confinement is over and it is time to enjoy. Emanuel and Mandy with Isabel and Aurora. Also, good news from Philip and Julie who have engaged back into ‘normal’ life: Riley and Zach – 1st year in school:

May the Lord bless them with a very joyful and fruitful future together!

Nuno and Cristy on their wedding – Congratulations!

We were blessed to have Joana with us on her birthday. She came to Portugal to be part of the wedding and we are hoping she with be staying here a little longer. Congrats Joana on another year and the best for years to come! All the family time together has been our gift!

A few days ago, someone wrote to me asking how he should introduce our work to a friend who is very interested, especially the audio Bibles. I suppose he wanted to know what church or denomination, what branch of Christianity, we were affiliated with or belong to.
Many people do not realize that the answer to this question is stated online, in the Wordproject webpages. It is all explained in our Faith and Mission Statements present in all our websites, a sample of which you may find here:

https://wordproject.org/contact/new/mstate.htm
Among other things, these statements say:

"Wordproject is an open and royalty free webpage that aims to make the Word of God - the Bible - available to as many people as possible, through a means that is simple, up-to-date and cheap to reproduce and use.", and
(wp) aims 'To provide versions of the Bible in several languages. Versions: King James Version; João Ferreira de Almeida (Portuguese); Reina Valera (Spanish); Louis Segond (French); Union Version (Chinese); Riveduta (Italian), Hindi; Romanized Hindi; Russian, German, Swahili, Amharic, and many more...”
"Wordproject is a global outreach that uses the Internet as a means to fulfill the great commission of Jesus Christ laid in the Holy Bible, New Testament, Mark 16:15 - "Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature".

This month, more precisely on April 12, Worproject celebrated 20 years of life. Thank God we survived our infancy and our teen years and we are now starting into adulthood. 😊

With the Lord’s help and so many people contributing to this project, we have accomplished quite a few things. Among them the recordings, in several languages, of the precious Word of Life, the Holy Scriptures of the Bible. We should never forget, nor doubt, the impact the Word has on the lives of many around the world. Not only as the Word of Salvation but also as the comfort, encouragement, strength and peace the Word brings to the hearts of those who seek, and in this case find, through our presence online, our Apps and the audio devices we make available. The many communications we receive from the field testify of this.
For example, just yesterday, we received a message from Mathias, the narrator of the Luganda Audio Bible, that said:

“Thank you so much for the work you do.
Thank you very much for not limiting the spread of the word of God with copyright.
From 3 a. m. I have been on the net and was surprised by the various sources that have used my narration and made apps! One even put it on YouTube as videos for each individual book
!!’ M

Indeed, Mathias, the power of WP has been that it allows and even encourages others to use our resources, thus exponentially multiplies its outreach. We are thankful for that too!

Here are a few more reactions received this month, in this case concerning our Apps:

Translated from Portuguese:
Extraordinário e edificante!! Recomendo demais! Deus continue usando vcs. Bênção demais para a minha vida e creio que de muitos. A palavra de Deus se renova a cada manhã. Viva e atual
Extraordinary and uplifting!! I highly recommend it! God continue to use you. Too much blessing for my life and I believe many. The word of God is renewed every morning. alive and current. ET

Translated from Spanish

Wonderful source of knowledge which you have the possibility to read and or listen to the word of God... AF
Translated from Portuguese
Very, efficient, her strongest point and the possibility of listening offline you are to be congratulated may God continue to bless all the team that are involved in this beautiful and effective project may the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the consolations of the Holy Spirit be always with you.  RC

We also receive requests which we do not know how and when we are able to fulfill. These give us the perspective of how much this baby still has to grow: 😉

My name is AT I live in a poor community it is difficult, I just wanted to ask if you would like to donate about 50 Afrikaans bibles to my church please, my pastor will and our congregation will be so grateful, My address is xxxxx Street, Asla Park, xxxxx.  Thank you very much, may the Lord bless you. AT

We are blessed to be part of this outreach and to have a team of workers and contributors that make this possible. If your name is not in here, make sure that it will be there soon:

Happy Birthday, Wordproject!! 🙂

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)

WP Update – March 2022

The world keeps changing at mind boggling speed and what was true yesterday maybe is no longer true today, especially when one follows the media trends and the algorith feeds that pop up constantly in our mobile devices. Thankfully there are other uses for our mobile phones, pads and computers – actually, here Wordproject offers impacting alternatives, namely through our APPs and our Website. Type ‘free audio Bibles’ in Google search engine and you will find our link right there on the first page. Then, just have fun and enrich yourself with the Words of Life that are true and eternal – make contact – with God. As the saying goes: ‘ water without fish, is still water. Earth without trees is still earth. But men without God is nothing.’

There is always new work to be done to keep the site and the apps serving their ultimate purpose to feed and reach to the far corners of the world. This is noticeable in some of the communications we receive this month from the users:

Loving greetings from India. My name is JP, I am working with Mission for the Lost organization. We work among the blind, disabled people, illiterate, and aged people in five states of India. We regularly distribute new testaments, Full bibles, and John gospels. We get requests from several people that they need audio bibles which will be very helpful to learn the Word of God. We have come to know about the Word Project audio bible, and we have seen several videos from youtube praising God for your wonderful ministry. We would like to know how to apply for audio bibles and whom to contact. please provide the procedure to apply and the contact details. I live in Chennai, Tamilnadu, India. Thank you. JP

Dear WordProject Team, Thank you for doing a great job in translating the holy scriptures to various world Languages.
I observed that the 3 major Nigerian Languages (Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa Languages) are yet to be available on your project.
I and my team at the Jesus Friends Club would love to volunteer to assist in any little way we can to make this available to you. We would be glad to serve in whatever capacity you want us to within our ability.
Thanks. SA

Dear team! Thank you very much for your work! The website is amazing and the mobile application is also very easy to use. However I would like to leave the feedback. It is regarding that I cannot access Ukrainian version of Holy Bible when using the apple application. It would be really great to make it work, especially during this difficult time for Ukraine and Ukrainian people... Thank you very much again for your hard work! RK

Other than that, we praise the Lord for his provision and protection and we rejoice to know that so many people are being blessed with the Truth of the Word of God, through the means we have made available and the maintenance and updating thereof is a permanent, howbeit very pleasant task.
And let us not forget the Audio Bibles devices still being distribted in Africa as we may see below:

Thank you for your support and your prayers. You are a blessing.

WP Update – February 2022

Just sharing with you a few of the many photographs (and videos) we received from our contacts in Africa, one of which is sister Mary, who has been faithful to distribute the Audio Bibles donated by our team in the several centers and schools for the blind in Kenya. It is encouraging to see how happy the people are for this precious, priceless gift, given to all of us by God, wherefore we are also happy to share with them.

Bless sister Mary for sharing these photos with us.
Sister Mary is the first from the left in this image. At the school for the blind in Machakos.
There was singing and dancing
Other recipients this month.
More recipients here. Thank the Lord for abundant supply of audio Bibles.

Remember to pray for these precious people, whose contact with information, in this age of super information, is only through audio. We pray that their hearts are warmed, their vision strengthened and their souls saved through the Words of our Father and His dear Son. I hope you also consider it a privilege to be part of WP team, no matter in what capacity or form – your prayers, your support or as a co-worker.

Other than that, this month we had the honor to edit and upload more than 100,000 pages – yes, the size of our website is up there – with the new updated interface, which is a beauty and also very functional – you should use it often and also share with your friends and acquaintances – just a suggestion, of course.

Some samples of the new design – remember Gabriel, our designer, in your prayers as he is trying a new life in Portugal.

Not least, here are some comments to our apps, which are most encouraging, as usual – except for a few discontent users that always want more…

Translated from Spanish:
"Excellent I was able to download the audios and listen to them offline and I can listen to the powerful word of God all the time I bless you all with the immense mercy of God very good many successes excellent great." MP
"Excelente pude bajar los audios y escucharlos sin conexion y puedo escuchar la poderosa palabra de dios todo el tiempo los bendigo a todos con la inmesa misericordia de dios muy buena muchos exitos excelente grandiosa"

Translated from French :

"Elle répond exactement à l'appui dont j'avais besoin en lecture et écoute de la parole de Dieu. Dieu bénisse ceux qui ont travaillé pour que l'application voit le jour et sois mise à la disposition de la communauté."

I love this app because I have trouble reading small print. Now I can just listen to God's Word. I love that I can pause when I need to and start again where I left off. KT

And also, no small amount of emails were received at our email box – some with interesting and unexpected questions that we, honestly, do not really know what to answer:

Dear fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. As I am launching a project of evangelisation, the use of your bible audio files in my youtube videos would be highly appreciated. The project consists of producing biblical paintings in order to reach out to the art world with the Christian message. Thus, the process of painting will be recorded on video with the aim to link the corresponding audio files to the subject matter. As the finished paintings will be sold on a separate webpage in order to fund for the kingdom of God, I kindly ask for your agreement to use your audio files for the videos. There is going to be a strict separation between selling the artwork and preaching the gospel through creating fine art. If you need further information about my purpose do not hesitate to contact me. Many thanks in advance for your treatment. Best regards S.S.

I love this platform and use it daily. I just want to alert you to a broken link. I opened Deuteronomy. From that page, I chose Audio and got a 404 message, "page not found". When I went back to Google and chose the audio link from there it worked. Blessings SP

In the Lord, greetings. When I found out about your project, I was very happy. I, while preaching the gospel, I own a small Christian Bible shop. Please, in this project, if possible, I will also work. I want Telugu audio Bibles. Full details for me Inform. Thank you. In GOD. Bro. A.K.

Hello! Good Day! I'm Warner, a 16 years old author. I am very grateful I discovered this website! The Tagalog translation are really easy to understand, and it suits a teenager like myself. I also noticed that the translation is a public domain? I'm now writing my first biblical novel. It's historical fiction in genre, a story of a girl in the time of the Lord Jesus. I can't find a free bible online where I can use for my story. Do you mind if I use this website as my source? Your responds is highly appreciated. Thank you! WPJ

Hello, Praise the Lord, I'm Anmol a Software Developer from India, I myself am a believer of Christ and by the grace of God, I got this website when I was searching for a verse and I'm amazed to see that this site provides bible verses in many languages and with audio, God put an idea in my mind that I should create a mobile app, I'm a Flutter app developer that's a framework with which we can create both an Android and iOS app with a single codebase I would like to contribute with your vision to spread the word of God to all apple through a mobile app, I also have experience in the past with similar app audio streaming using flutter and NodeJS. Christ's believer. AST

Hello, thank you for great work! Please add speed controller to audio bible listening site. It would be very beneficial for many people to be able to slow down audio bible, let's say, to 0.75x speed. Kind regards,CF

Dear WordProject, Thank you for the audio bible collections in different languages. I am Kiswahili speaker. I am also a Masters student developing my thesis project on a Kiswahili Text-to-Speech system. Kiswahili language is a low-resource language since there is a limited available dataset. Building a Text-to-Speech system requires a lot of data for training and evaluation. I am therefore requesting you grant me to use the Kiswahili audio bible dataset to build the system. The dataset will require both audio and text. I will download the audio file chapterwise and assign it to the Bible section's corresponding text. Therefore, I will require about 5 Bible books. I will be much thankful if you will allow me. Thank you in advance for your kind consideration. KKR

Dear Worldproject. We’re Wehear app (link). Now we would like to ask for your permission to use the English version of the Bible from your website as an audiobook on our APP. Looking forward to your reply. L.

Hello, Could you allow me to upload audio Bibles on youtube for non-profit videos? I am a Christian pastor who has a Christian youtube channel and I would like my audience to listen to the bible.  I'll site the link and the source. Thanks for your help. TL

Great Bible.  Trying to learn the Russian language with it so I read it first in English and then read it in Russian. Yesterday was the first time I found it and it was in two columns and audio was available. Today it was presented English on top and Russian on bottom but NO audio available. I prefer this presentation but is it possible to have the audio of the Russian language? Thank you for creating this resource. SM

As you may see, many people are engaged in doing their part in the promotion of the Word. We should not forget that we are at war — not the one you may be thinking about – which is concerning and needs our prayers too – but the kind that talks about in Ephesians 6:12 – “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places”.

WP January Update – 2022

Gabriel has been working on a new interface for WP and this month we started to upload a more simple, user-friendly, and more appealing design for WP website. First, we replaced some buttons and unclogged some of the pages. Now, we are getting into deeper changes, starting with the audio section of the site.

Meanwhile, corrections to text and audio keep coming every month and January was no exception. Improvements were made to Portuguese, Spanish and Chinese. These are mostly details such as missing letters or words, punctuation and some technical errors here and there. There is always room for improvement.

Our audio output increased this month to 31 terabytes, which should mean an increasing interest worldwide in hearing the Word. We see a few good reasons for such, as the world’s health deteriorates, and nothing seem to help. More and more, God’s answers are becoming mainstream.

The comments from users are mostly encouraging and there are other people out there who wish to take active part in the great mission and wish to create their own local websites or apps. We receive several requests for permission to user the text or audio or both, which is general is not even necessary because that is already expressed in our online disclaimers and notices.

What (some of) Our users wrote in January:

"Grace for to whom it may concern: I am interested in using your recording of the reading of RV1960 Bible on an internet radio program I am setting up. I would plan to just add the MP3 to some introduction music and a Bible lesson which we will produce. Do I need any copyright permission to use these MP3 recordings? Thanks in advance." U.
"I would like to seek your permission to use Tamil Audio Bible ( only verse ) for my page like Fb, insta and YouTube. Daily Bible verse with audio ( not whole chapter) randomly use for single verse. Kindly let me know! Thanks. "J
"I would like to ask if you guys could make a Traditional Chinese version with the pinyin beside it. I am trying to learn Chinese and so I find it very useful to have the Traditional Chinese and the pinyin together. Also, it would be useful if the translation goes in accordance with the English Standard Version so I can use it as reference. Thank you for your help. Keep doing what you are doing and may God bless you greatly." G
"Hello there. My name is Maudlyn and I am a believer. I am so delighted to get on your page and learn about what you do as an organization. I once had a device like this and I enjoyed using it greatly, it would be great to have certain members of the community have access to it too. How do I partner in the distribution of this audio Bible in my community, Nigeria in Africa. I look forward to your response. Thank you." MA
"I attend the local Lutheran Mission where I reside and have recently renewed my affinity with the books of the bible. The reason I am contacting and reaching out to you is to express my appreciation of your published work.
Thank you very much for making it available on my Android smartphone." SR
"My name is Zohaib Asfand. I am from Sahiwal Pakistan. I belong to a Christian family. I am constant visitor of your website. I have done Masters and still jobless because of minority. I want to translate these lectures and bible books in Urdu and Punjabi language, this will be a good step for Christians in Pakistan, they will get more knowledge about Christianity and easily understand the word of God in their own languages. By this i will get a job as well.
Muslim people hate Christians and don’t give us opportunity to earn for living also not give us jobs due to this Christians are below poverty line. Most of Christians converted into Islam because of poverty and lack of bible knowledge. By this we can survive our Christian community. At this time just 2% Christians left in Pakistan due to lack of knowledge about Christianity. This will be a great step for poor Christian people in Pakistan." ZA
"Hope you had a great Christmas and New year! I am very lucky to find the various bible translations at wordproject.com. It is a fantastic site, and helps people read and understand the bible a lot better. I need your help. My son Raphael Samuel, who is a college student at the University of Texas is making a phone app for bible study and it needs text files or similar files of bible in various languages. I am happy to see you worked on this, and have a full collection. We greatly appreciate your help if you could send me text files of the whole bible in different languages that you have available. As soon as we have the phone app ready, we will send you a copy to review and make it better. Thank you very much for your help. " MS
"To whom it may concern: I am interested in using your recording of the reading of RV1960 Bible on an internet radio program I am setting up. I would plan to just add the MP3 to some introduction music and a Bible lesson which we will produce. Do I need any copyright permission to use these MP3 recordings? Thanks in advance." DG
"I am on your website and I like the audio version and see that the files can be downloaded in chapters. My question is; can I download it and use it as a reference on my site? This way, it would take up too much bandwidth on your end. I would appreciate it." SM

Africa

From Africa we received news that the new order of audio bibles arrived in Nairobi and soon after that, we received some touching images of their distribution from Mary. We are thankful for this opportunity to offer free audio Bibles, and in the case of the blind community, who show real appreciation for these gifts.

Family Update – Jan 2022

By Donna

We celebrated many birthdays this month and grand were the wishes to those blessed souls! 🙂 We visited with Cristiana and Nuno via zoom call and it was nice to be all together again, singing Happy Birthday! Soon thereafter was Emanuel’s special day and his celebratory dinner was presential since we are neighbors and Jo and Ben were able to attend. Thank God for such blessing! Last, but not least, Philip and Gabriel woke up very early for the second time so that we could wish Philip a very Happy Day on his side of the planet!
All in all, we are getting older, and hopefully wiser, and that is a very good thing! 😉
Chinese New Year’s Eve fell on the last day of the month! Once again, a celebration of new beginnings and hope for the future! We had a lovely dinner with Emanuel, Mandy and family with the traditional New Year delicacies and customs!
Xin Nian Kuai Le!! Happy New Year once again!!!

Prayer requests:

  • Continued health and strength;
  • Pandemic and mandates will come to an end;
  • Protection from cyber-attacks on website and servers;
  • All those studying and taking exams.

2021 – Summary

Worproject 2021 Highlights

“For the word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of the soul and spirit and of the joints and marrow and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

“天主的話確實是生活的,是有效力的,比各種雙刃的劍還銳利,直穿入靈魂和神魂,關節與骨髓的分離點,且可辨別心中的感覺和思念。”希伯來書 4:12

Our mission is to bring the Word of God to as many people as possible in as many languages as possible. This is what we have been doing for many years and thank God, together with you, we have been able to fulfill that mission. Here are just a few of the areas where we have invested time and financial resources in 2021:

Production and supply of free audio Bibles (SR600) to needy people in Africa was again one of our major outreaches. In spite of the fact that this year it has been increasingly difficult, we were able to send several shipments, mostly to a blind people organization in Nairobi, Kenya. See images below:
We also sent a shipment of audio Bibles to Portugal, which are being freely distributed by one of our contacts there. Recently, several extra audio Bibles devices were sent to us from China, which we charged with Tagalog audio narration, and we have been distributing them to the Filipino community here,

Audio of the Verse selection by topics in Tagalog was recorded. The Old Testament of the Brazilian narration of the Bible was concluded this year. See Below:
Tagalog Verse Selection
Brazilian Portuguese Old Testament.

New indexing of audio for WP app was done and the number of permanent users keeps increasing. The languages offered in that APP was increased from 4 to 7, including Chinese and Brazilian Portuguese. The new App is available here.

Almost every day we receive requests for improvements in different aspects of the website and the apps. Maintaining and upkeeping the website is basically a daily job that requires attention and care, to make sure everything is working and there are no problems with servers and structures. The main object is to keep God’s Word available to the people, free of charge, in many languages, serving almost all regions of the world.

People out there are very thankful for this work and send words of appreciation: From Elisabeth of the Blind People Association of Kenya we received this note: ‘I thank God for having received this Bible reader, it will help me for it is going to be convenient in scripture searching for my own spiritual nourishment …I lost my sight at the age of six months. It was not easy but God saw me through. My sight came back gradually although it is very little, but now, instead of straining, I will be listening and I appreciate so much. It is my prayer that God will bless the donor and strengthen him/her. Thank you.’
More comments here.

For people who wish to create a Bible site of their own, in their own language, or even in multiple languages – we have a location for them to download all the files into their computers.

2021 Statistics

Total audio downloaded: @ 331,000 GB = 331 Terabytes (roughly equivalent to 331 million audio Bible Chapters) –

December 2021 Update

Please follow this link for year summary:

https://www.wordprolog.org/action/_2021_wp_report.htm

Christmas! One of the most wonderful times of the year! I am convinced that it is because we are praising Christ as King more frequently throughout the entire month of December! Our spirits are lifted through constant reminders of the infant Messiah and it seems like more of the kingdom of heaven has come down to earth!  We became acquainted with some previously unknown to us classic renditions of Christmas hymns this season and they truly blessed our times of song and praise and worship!

As family, we were able to be together for our Christmas Eve dinner and Carol singing tradition and partake in a Zoom Christmas call with the members of our family who are living abroad. We also wished Gabriel, a very happy birthday on the 23rd, as, even though he is far away, he is always so close to home during Christmas Sweet Riley also celebrated her 3rd birthday on the 3rd of December!  Riley and family are thoroughly enjoying a very, very White Christmas this year!

In Portugal, Gloria was involved in the organization of the initiative “Natal Diferente” founded by medical students from the two faculties of medicine in Lisbon. The goal of this initiative was to bring a little bit of the Christmas spirit and share a moment of care through music, personal conversation and small gifts with hospitalized patients who find themselves away from home and family on Christmas but also with nursing home and other institution residents. The organizers reached out to many hospitals, nursing homes, institutions, donors and fellow students to carry out the task of reaching thousands of people in Lisbon but also in other places in Portugal (Beja, Santarém, Leiria and Madeira). They also showed love and appreciation to medical staff working through the Christmas Holidays.

A friendly tournament, the Xmas cup, was held between the local youth teams. Sporting’s chemistry was good and was able to take first place! It was good friendly completion and an inspiring experience for all!

As the New Year arrived, we joined to share our thankfulness, prayers and verses for the upcoming year in a simple but meaningful ceremony. We light our small candle to receive light from the big candle which represents Jesus. Thus, we are stating that through receiving and being filled with the Light of the world, Jesus Christ, we are thankful for the many blessings and mercies the Lord has shown us throughout the past year, despite the challenges and difficulties that life presented.  Also, because we believe the promises in His Word, we can expect Jesus to help us achieve the goals and prayers we have for the year to come. Jesus Christ, our living Hope!

May the Word of God flood the earth and we pray that you and your loved ones be blessed in your lives and in your personal walk with God.
